This SAFE, simple and environmentally friendly process cleans tarnished silver jewellery in minutes, bringing your treasured items back to their original sparkling sheen.
PLEASE NOTE: Any jewellery feautring intentionally oxidised finishes should not cleaned in this way. Do not use this method to clean Amber jewellery or jewellery incorporating wood.
Here’s what you need and how to do it:
1. You’ll need: Packet of Lectric Soda (available in the dishwashing section of your supermarket), Aluminium Foil, Bowl.
2. Simply cover the inside of the bowl with a layer of Aluminium Foil and fill with warm water (not boiling) then stir in 1 tablespoon of Lectric Soda, making sure it dissolves.
3. Place your tarnished silver jewellery into the bowl, making sure it is in contact with the foil, and within a matter of minutes (or less), it will turn shiny and bright again.
4. Take the jewellery out and make sure you rinse under running water, then carefully dry with a tea-towel, or better still use a hair dryer (front and back). This will make sure there are no dried water marks left on the silver surface.
This process works on the chemical reaction of the soda and aluminuim foil, which in turn converts the silver sulphide tarnish, effectively removing it. This process will not remove scratches or in some cases silver that is severely tarnished, in which case products such as “Silvo” may be used.
